When I got my first computer, I knew I needed instruction in ways to make the best possible use of it... My favorite aspect of Stan's teaching method was his ability to put me at ease when I was feeling frustrated... I never was made to feel that teaching me might be a hopeless endeavor. Firam Diels

Need to learn the basics - Flying dove

CHALLENGE: You have a computer but don’t know much about using it. You are not comfortable experimenting on your own and need help understanding some basic concepts.

SOLUTION: I will work with you side-by-side to explain the basics of computer use, including how to approach self-learning of the applications that are most important to you.

CASE STUDY 1: An assisted-living home offered a computer lab to residents but many of them were unfamiliar with basic computer operations. Residents wanted to learn how to use word processing and email in order to communicate with family and friends. I conducted group learning sessions and individual coaching to cover the basics of computer use from logging on to the machine and navigating the hard drive, to the basics of Microsoft Word and Outlook Express, including file attachment for image sharing. Group members also learned how to browse the web using Internet Explorer.

CASE STUDY 2: A new computer owner needed to learn basic computer operation. She had used computers at work but wanted to get involved with the internet. We worked together to cover operations such as using her word processing and email client, navigating the internet using various browsers, installing applications, etc. This person is now able to advise family and friends on aspects of basic computer operations.

CASE STUDY 3: An artist wanted to gain a web presence and wasn’t sure how to proceed, especially considering lack of money. After consultation we decided that Facebook and WordPress.org offered most of what he wanted for free. I coached him on setting up and managing his Facebook profile, including privacy options. We worked together to get him started using the free service of WordPress.org, including uploading and editing content and managing free themes.
